Had a couple close calls over the last 2 days, but thankfully, I was here to observe and assist only when needed!!
It's been my goal this lambing group to not interfere as much as I typically do... especially since a lot in this group are lambing for their first time.
Ewe lambs can be easily freaked out, and associate trauma with their lamb... so I've been letting nature do the work as much as I can!!
Finally also had to wave the white flag with my engorged ewe... She just wouldn't let me milk her out to help with the swelling... and by day 2, the lambs were getting too weak to even fight for a drink...
You win some, you lose some...

Poor ewe ... she needs warm compresses on her teats. I know its not really feasible with how many you have, but its too bad she can't get some warm compresses.

What is the window on receiving colostrum? When would be too late? What is ideal? The ewe with inflamed/engorged udder, should she not be stripped out to prevent mastitis? If it is too uncomfortable are there other options? 50 years ago, when we had a cow with this same problem and we had a tube type device, looked a bit like a rivet, that was inserted into the teat to allow it to drain without manipulating the teat or utter. It worked great as long as there was no clotting or lumps. Those, unfortunately, had to be stripped out. (We were able to save the quarter and that cow went on to produce 7 sets of twins. The calf she'd just had was sired by a Charlais and was over 100 lbs at birth. She was half Shorthorn and a quarter each of Holstein and Jersey(lots of cream at the top of the milk pitcher every morning!)) Is there any such device for sheep? You would have to be able to confine her as in a milking station. Which is a perfect segway to the automatic milker that someone else mentioned in comments last lambing? Have you given any further though to possibly obtaining one of these? And I would like to see more on your data collection and how you use it. As well as why you use Isle de France and Suffolk as terminal sires, and how do you know a lamb is sired by Isle de France (Suffolk is rather obvious) and not. So disappointed that You Tube doesn't get that birthing lambs is a big part of the life of sheep farmers. But you, you are GREAT! Please keep the videos coming, with all the good, bad and ugly. The consumer should know what it takes to put the food on our tables. And it looks like this old dog is going to have to learn about instagram...

Sandi, I have been subscribed to your channel for some time now and really appreciate all the work you do to get videos posted so frequently! I would like to say that these are your sheep, your farm, and if you feel that you need to intervene when a ewe appears distressed then do so. It is better to get involved when you are not needed than to stand back and potentially lose a lamb or a ewe! Do what you feel is best for your animals and don't worry about the nay-sayers.

The baby lambs are so CUTE! When I see them run back and forth, it reminds me of cartoons in the 40s and 50s. They had cartoons about, Little Bo Peep tending her sheep plus other cartoons with lambs. They are so sweet, and innocent. How can anyone not love lambs. 🤫 I had lamb chops for dinner. They were delicious🤫

*Ouch! Looking at the poor ewe’s swollen and red udder brought me right back to my bout with mastitis. I’m NOT joking when I say that I’d rather do labor and delivery again than cope with mastitis. The pain was unrelenting AND you also feel like you’ve got a case of the world’s worse flu! You already feel like you’ve been in a car accident from the labor and delivery. To have your boobs go straight to the rock like stage and stay that way, ouch! I was reduced to laying on my back with hot, wet towels as I cried. It already seems as if your leaking from every orifice when you’re postpartum, which is also miserable. Oh, and I happen have a very high level of pain tolerance too. I’ve ruptured a disc in my back, had 3 episodes of kidney stones, fractured bones and birthed a human being. Having mastitis was the only time I’ve ever been reduced to tears of pain...* 🤷🏻‍♀️

Has the ewe you have given up on been given antibiotics? The way she kicked her udder tells me she is in pain. Also it would help her to be penned separately and just feed straw to dry her up.quicker.

Because Sandi has such a popular channel, she has been targeted by some extreme animal rights groups and individuals. They complain to AM-posts for things like "cruelty" aka shearing and trimming hooves and ''obscenity" aka showing births. When there are complaints, Sandi get no income from the video.

Hi sandi What kind of sheep do you have?
MobyDicksWife 3 ամիս առաջ
Sandi has Rideau-Arcott and a local cross-breed called "Steele" that a friend of hers is developing for her ewe flock. For rams, she has Suffolk and Isle de France to sire meat lambs for sale, and Rideau-Arcott and Steele to sire replacement ewes for breeding.

Hi Sandi, love your blogs. I was wondering though, why do you keep all your sheep indoors? Having them on a field would be so much easier as you wouldn't have to make sure they always had feed. I understand lambing indoors but otherwise sheep can be kept outdoors. Our flock spend 100% of their time in a field, even lambing, and it makes it so easy knowing I am not responsible for feeding them.
MobyDicksWife 3 ամիս առաջ
@Gully R. Sandi grows the hay she feeds, and wheat for the grain to sell, which also gives straw to bed the sheep. She and Mark also grown canola, beans, and corn, all of which are cash crops. The sheep are not the main money-makers on the farm. So, with the land used for cash crops, she does not have land for pasture. And remember she farms in Canada. You cannot pasture feed all year, at least five months of the year you need to feed hay, which you either buy or grown. And being in Canada, we have winter. Sheep do not do well in four feet of snow which lasts for months at a time. And to finish, Gully R was totally right. There is a serious coyote problem in Ontario and East. Coyotes do not just kill and eat, a pack will go on killing sprees, ripping the bellies of the sheep, and leaving them to die.
Gully R.
Gully R. 3 ամիս առաջ
She has said that there are too many predators (coyotes I believe) to allow them to live outdoors.

Since your IDFs were such a small group, that one really low weight can lower the average quite a bit. If it was significantly lower weight than the others, check the average if you leave it out. That'll give you a better picture of how the IDF group is doing.

OK,I feel like a fool but I’m going to tell you a true story....I was about 22 years old riding in a car with my husband and mother-in-law through Florida New York, and we were going past what I had always assumed was a cow ranch. I suddenly saw a little bit smaller cow and she was pure white and had longer curly hair (fur, whatever) I had never seen one like her so I made my husband stop, she was beautiful and I asked “is she a cow?” My husband said “No, she is a cow-sheep” I knew better than to take him at his word but then my M-I-L agreed and said she used to see cow-sheep all the time as a child. Well, I figured she wouldn’t lie to me so I was seeing my first “cow-sheep”. Yup! For a couple more YEARS they had me thinking it was that, and I am by no means stupid, but I do realize I don’t know everything, and I was trusting my M-I-L, not my husband. I finally saw the farmer who owned that ranch one day when I was driving by and I stopped to tell him how beautiful his cow-sheep was that I had seen a couple years before. Imagine my surprise when he just looked at me, shook his head and started laughing. Yeah, the joke was on me. He told me what breed of cow it was, but it’s been almost forty years and I’ve forgotten, I believe it was from a different country, NOT A SHEEP, LOL.

Do any of the other mothers try to steal lambs? I’ve heard off them doing that. Love to see all the new baby’s. You have got your hands full with them all.
MobyDicksWife 3 ամիս առաջ
Yes, some ewe's do try to steal. It is mostly mature ewe's that have had lambs before. It seems the start of labour triggers something in their brain that yells "BABY!" and they start trying to steal any new lambs they see. The big problem, the stealer does not nurse the lamb with that all important first drink. The next problem is when they have their own lamb/s they lose all interest in the stolen baby and drive it away. The lamb then does know who their mother is or what she smells like. For the real mom, if the stealer has licked her scent off the babies, she sometimes does not recognize them. Sandi keeps a close eye on the ewes and will separate the stealer from the new mom as soon as possible, and pen the new mom and her lamb/s together, sometimes rubbing some of the birth fluids on them to make sure they smell right. Once a lamb has had a drink from mom everything usually works out.

Is it my imagination, or is having fewer high multiples and giving the ewes space and letting them get on with it resulting in less meconium staining? Which means a more relaxed labour, giving lambs a better start in life. Meconium staining really isn't a positive sign, I like seeing white lambs being born! 👍🏻
